Will RFID Tags on Clothing Set Off Store Anti-Theft Gates?

Short answer: usually not, because RFID and store anti-theft gates (EAS) are two different technologies that happen to sit at the same doorway. But “usually not” is not the same as “never,” and the exceptions matter to uniform rental companies, hospitality laundries, and retailers running both systems at once.

RFID and EAS Are Not the Same System

EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) is the technology behind the classic hard plastic tag or the flat adhesive strip that triggers a beep at the door. It works on a small number of frequency bands — most commonly acousto-magnetic (AM) or radio-frequency (RF, distinct from RFID) — and it answers exactly one question: is a live, unremoved EAS element present. It carries no identity data.

RFID operates its own tags on its own protocol, most commonly UHF RAIN RFID (860–960 MHz) for apparel and laundry, or HF/NFC (13.56 MHz) for close-range tagging. An RFID tag carries a unique identity (EPC) that a compatible RFID reader can look up — it is not built to trip an EAS gate, and an EAS gate is not built to read an RFID tag’s identity.

A garment or linen item carrying only an RFID tag will not, by itself, set off a standard EAS gate. The two systems do not share a detection mechanism.

When Cross-Triggering Actually Happens

False alarms do happen, and they trace back to three situations rather than to RFID itself:

  • Dual-tagged items. Some retail source-tagging programs embed both an EAS element and an RFID inlay in the same label to get loss-prevention detection and inventory visibility from one tag. In that case, the EAS component triggers the gate — the RFID component is along for the ride, not the cause.
  • RAIN RFID retail gates. A small but growing number of stores use UHF RFID-based exit sensors instead of, or alongside, traditional EAS — these are a genuine RFID security layer, and an unremoved/undeactivated tag in that specific store will trigger it by design. This is different from a laundry or uniform-rental RFID tag accidentally triggering an unrelated store’s EAS.
  • Garments moving between systems. A uniform rental or hospital laundry tag has no reason to interact with a retail store’s EAS at all, since it never passes through that gate. The scenario buyers actually worry about — “will our laundry RFID tags set off gates at stores we have nothing to do with” — essentially doesn’t occur, because EAS and RFID require their own matched reader/gate infrastructure to detect anything.

What This Means for Laundry, Uniform, and Apparel Programs

If your program only uses RFID (no EAS element in the tag), you do not need to plan around store gate false alarms — the tag simply isn’t detectable by that system. The relevant planning questions are the ones that affect your own RFID reads, not someone else’s EAS gate:

  • If you are running both RFID and EAS in the same retail environment, confirm with your tag supplier whether tags are dual-technology or RFID-only, and test at your actual gate hardware before rollout.
