Hotel Group Cuts Linen Loss by 30% with Washable RFID Laundry Tags

A hotel group operating multiple properties from a shared central laundry needed to reduce linen loss and speed up sorting between the laundry facility and individual hotel inventories.

The Challenge

Linen was disappearing between the central laundry and individual properties

The group's central laundry processes linen for several hotel properties, with trolleys of sheets, towels, and pillowcases moving between the laundry facility and each hotel multiple times per week. Without item-level tracking, linen routinely went missing during transfers, sorting relied on visual inspection of sewn-in fabric labels that faded after repeated washing, and the group had no reliable way to measure loss rates per property or estimate replacement budgets.

The Solution

UHF washable tags heat-sealed into linen for bulk scanning at every transfer point

RFIDEcho supplied Washable Textile RFID Laundry Tags, heat-sealed into each linen item during a planned re-tagging of the group's active inventory. Each tag was pre-encoded with an EPC identifying both the item type and the property it belonged to. UHF readers installed at the central laundry's intake and dispatch points, and at each hotel's linen room, now scan entire trolleys in a single pass and record which property each item returned to. For back-of-house items requiring autoclave-compatible tracking, Heat-Resistant Silicone RFID Laundry Tags were used as a more rugged alternative.

The Results

Measurable Impact

  • 30% Reduction in linen loss within the first six months of rollout
  • 200+ Wash cycles per tag without loss of read performance
  • 1,000 Items scanned per trolley pass at intake and dispatch points

“Knowing exactly how much linen each property is losing changed how we budget for replacements. The tags survive our wash cycles without any special handling from housekeeping.”
